Sister Helen stays next to Poncelet through the final days of his life. The faith of the two gets challenged, but they overcome this challenge by the superiority of the friendship they have together. At the end of the film, we see a montage of what happened that night of the murder in the woods, while Poncelet is heading towards his execution and ultimately dies. .
The greatest theme in this film is the power of forgiveness. We see that Poncelet is truly sorry for what he is done towards the end of the film.
