Joel Rosenman, John Roberts, Artie Kornfield, and Michael Lang created Woodstock. The original plan for Woodstock was to build a recording studio in the town of Woodstock. Woodstock had become a rock center when musician Bob Dylan and a rock group called The Band settled there. Bob Dylan did not appear at the festival, which was held nowhere near Woodstock (Woodstock Remembered). To promote the idea of the studio the four partners of the music festival decided to stage a concert, which they officially called the Woodstock Festival and Art Fair. The partners rented a field from a local dairy farmer, Max Yasgur, who owned land about 48 miles from Woodstock. .
The most famous of the sixties rock festival was Woodstock music and art fair, It was held on a farm property in Bethel New York, on August 15-17th 1969. Three days of peace and music would come to define a generation (Woodstock 69). It was planned as a three day outdoors festival, featuring a few of the new, hard rock bands (Woodstock Remembered). Festival organizers decided on the title Woodstock because it was where folksinger Bob Dylan and many other musicians lived in New York. People came from all around, some for music some for atmosphere and some just to be there. .
The original concept of was for 100,00 or so to camp out on a sylvan glade in upstate New York for a few weekend blast of great music and carnival rides (Woodstock 25). The organizers knew that more than 200,000 would likely show up. However they said that about 100,000 or so would attend. It was estimated that an unexpected 400,000 or more people attended. Although peace was a main theme of the concert, it was difficult to keep with a crowd of 400,00 people. The festival included many social dramas. Woodstock taught people approximately 400,000,how to resolve their issues by sharing a common goal. The celebration helped to advance the ideas of peace and unity throughout the generation.
