             1. This along with her family history has led psychiatrists such as Dr. Valerie Shikhverg, who states in Goddess, that he believed that she was a prime candidate for a "borderline" personality.
             Transition: The symptoms of this diagnosis seem to fit Marilyn's personality and may have led to her problems to deal with her relationships in a normal manner.
             II. Marilyn's married life was not always the most pleasant of times.
             A. Her first marriage was to Jim Dougherty when she was sixteen years old.
             1. Marilyn is quoted by as saying that "she never had a choice in the marriage. It was all arranged by [her guardian ] Grace McKee".
             2. Even Jim notes that it was a "loveless, planned courtship that led to real affection only some months after they were married." (Guiles 34).
             3. She divorced Jim in July of 1946, while he was overseas in the war.
             a. The same year she met with Ben Lyon's, the head of casting for Fox. .
             b. Lyon's was also the one responsible for renaming her Marilyn Monroe.
             B. Her second marriage is slightly disputed.
             1. Most say it was to Joe DiMaggio in 1954, but there are some, such as Anthony Summers, who discuss the rumors of a short marriage and divorce to one Robert Slatzer in 1952 in Mexico. (Summers 76).
             2. Many claim the "DiMaggio Disaster" as Summers labels it, was doomed from the start since Joe was a jealous man and was not thrilled to share his new wife.
