Brave new world1

To make sure that it stays that way, specific scientific procedures such as Neo-Pavlovian conditioning and hypnopaedia are used to train children to like and dislike certain aspects of life. This not only forces them to be like everyone else, it also strips them of any sort of independent learning. An example of this would be the procedure of electrically shocking children in the presence of books and flowers, in order for them to "be safe from books and botany all of their lives." (Huxley, 18). This takes away any sort of way for children to seek knowledge and enlighten their senses in aspects other than what the authoritative government provides. Barriers begin to form within the individuals mentality, forcing them to never make any decisions or judgments on their own, for it goes against their specific morals. It has affected every citizen's mentality, even one as bright as Alpha Plus Bernard Marx, for he stated that " civilization is sterilization." (Huxley, 110). It just comes even the smartest human is convinced by such persuasion, proving that they have little control over what is to come of their lives. Without being able to learn anything other than what everyone else is learning, it makes these citizens appear to be quite dull and trapped. They never feel dull or trapped however, due to the continuous, though different type of brainwashing done, involving forced beliefs and emotions that take their individuality. .
The forced emotions and beliefs have taken individuality away from them. Individuality is one of the most substantial and important things that define us as humans. Due to the conditioning that has taken their freedom away, they are practically emotionless beings. The only emotion that is truly felt is happiness, since they are permanently happy due to the "wonder drug" soma. If there is even one hint of anger detected, soma is prescribed to remedy this so-called problem.
