Who are the Sons of God

 

            
            
            
             The problem with this text is the identity of the "sons of GOD-. Seeing that this is the first time the term "sons of GOD- has been introduced in the bible, and throughout the bible the same them is used for different created beings, it makes it difficult to decipher which beings are being spoken of here. There are several different views which give us opinions to whom these beings might be, but the four most disputed ones will be presented.
             I. The "sons of GOD- are Kings or Royals.
             A. Arguments for the view.
             1. Elohim can be interpreted as judges as in Ex 21:6: 22:8-9.
             2. King called GOD'S son (II Sam. 7:14 and Ps. 2:7).
             3. Helps to explain why men (opposed to Angles) were judged for intermarriage.
             4. Gilgamesh qualifies in four ways.
             i. By virtue of titulary.
             ii. "hero of old- (gibborim) "giant- (nephilim).
             iii. Takes wives (whichever ones he wants).
             iv. Frustrated in his attempts to gain immortality.
             B. Arguments Against the view.
             1. Nowhere else in the Bible is "sons of GOD- used for Kings (royalty).
             C. Proponents of the view.
             Those for this view are John H. Walton.
             II. The "sons of GOD- are those from the line of Seth.
             A. Arguments for the view.
             1. Sons of GOD means members of the faithful lineage (Seth's).
             2. The elect nation of Israel (descendants of the Seth line) is called GOD'S son (Ex. 4:22; Deut. 14:1).
             3. Noah and Lamek are called the sons of GOD.
             B. Arguments Against the view.
             1. From the reference to men in 6:1, it is inconceivable that women are being signified in the later verses.
             2. How would intermarriage between two races from the same ancestor result in Giants?.
             3. The meaning in verse one is to narrow.
             4. Unlikely that all the descendants of Seth were Godly and of Cain ungodly.
             C. Proponents of the view.
             Those for this view are Arnold, Jacob, Murphy.
             III. The "sons of GOD- are demons who possessed humans.
             A. Arguments for the view.
             1. Angels needed human bodies to have intercourse.
             2. Makes it full man instead of ½ man ½ angel.
