" A key scene in which Vincent's developing desire to succeed is revealed, is when he expresses to his brother Anton that he dreams of travelling to space, Anton replies with "I bet I could be one if I wanted." This constant reminder of his inadequacies are what encourages Vincent to prove his brother wrong. Vincent's aspiring desires are further shown in the regular competition of "chicken" that he has with Anton. It is here that Vincent's struggle through life is symbolised as he struggles to swim through the relentless seaweed, that is, the obstacles in his life. It is when, after years of failing, Vincent finally wins, that he gains complete confidence within himself. As he swims to victory in this scene, there is no seaweed in his path, he finds it easy, almost as if it is expected. "It was the moment that made everything else possible.".
Vincent responds to his perceived handicaps and the injustice that results from them by becoming unwavering in his determination to succeed. As he begins applying for a career in space travel it becomes blatantly obvious that no matter how hard he studies or works out or lies, his "real resume was in (his) cells." As Vincent contacts German, it becomes clear Vincent's determination will stop at nothing, even his own identity cannot stunt him, "I made up my mind to resort to more extreme measures." His transformation from Vincent Anton Freeman into Jerome Morrow is a tedious and trying event, however, despite the pain and effort Vincent goes ahead with it comparatively willingly. When told that he is too short and will have to undergo an excruciating operation to stretch his legs, Vincent is hesitant, but when Eugene questions his commitment Vincent proves to him that he is "110% committed." This is a turning point in the movie as Eugene gains respect for Vincent and confidence within his dedication, "Jerome never questioned my commitment again I took my mind off the pain by reminding myself that when I did eventually stand up, I"d be exactly two inches closer to the stars.
