In Wilfred Owens's Poem he uses very dramatic imagery to capture the readers attention. The effect this poem has is that it brought the images of war home to those who did not fight, so that they could see what was so decorous about fighting for one's country. Every line of this piece lets you feel the pain and struggle of the men that were there in the fight. .
During this time in history if men didn't fight then they were considered cowards but not many people actually knew what they were signing up for. Their governments would tell them how necessary war was and that they needed to make the sacrifice for their countries, but very few would tell them what to really expect. Many of these men including Owen were hardly 21 years old, yet they were expected to give their lives without question. .
The images that are depicted in this poem are very descriptive. If someone was going to go and join this war then Owen's poem was ready to show you the truth. The images he portrays put the reader right in the middle of the action. In lines 5 and 6 Owen shows us the men marching " Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots but limped on, blood-shod. even to the hoots of tired, outstripped five nines that dropped behind". It almost seems as if they are in a dream like state, their bodies just keep moving not even bothered by the extremely close noises of war. .
Once the bombs are dropped behind them the men finally wake up only to be stuck in the middle of a waging war. This vision absolutely horrifies me. Imagine the fumbling for your helmet and the fear you would feel. In lines 12, 13 and 14 Owen shows us the panic the men were feeling "And flound"ring like a man in fire or lime Dim, though the misty panes and thick green light, as under a green sea, I saw him drowning".
