A PEEK INSIDE HEDDA'S LITTLE SOCIETY

She hides behind her father when Loevborg tells her of his dissipations. She seems to live through Loevborg because she is so afraid to live life herself as a scandal might develop. John Northam states: "An expression of an aristocratic fastidiousness that demands privacy from the intrusions of the vulgar world.".
Hedda's personality is very dominant and she needs to be in control of everything, clearly a destiny as she puts it. She doesn't have the courage to live her own destiny, so she makes it her vocation to be able to control others the way she sees fit. Here brings on Hedda's dilemmas.
Hedda's personality develops into chaos .
Hedda has come home from a boring honeymoon and things are not turning out as Hedda has planned, probably for the first time in her life. She is entering a middle class society and is being brought into a family she wants no part of. Hedda calls Bertha "that maid" as she must know she helped raise Tesman. She refuses to call Tesman's Aunt Auntie Ju Ju and pushes her away when she tries to get close. .
MISS TESMAN [Goes to greet Hedda] Good morning Hedda dear! Good morning! .
HEDDA [holds out her hand] Good Morning, dear Miss Tesman. .
Miss Tesman is excited exclaiming good morning and calling Hedda by her Christian name. Hedda on the other hand answers very cold and snubs her by calling her "Miss Tesman" even after the fact Tesman told her it would please her to be called Auntie JuJu. She even holds out her hand to distance her. Hedda seems to always push people away when they show her affection or draw too much attention to her. When Loevborg tried to get intimate with her she threatened to shoot him. When Miss Tesman blesses and kisses her for the fact she is pregnant she backs away and asks to be let go and goes into an angry fury after everyone leaves the scene. Northam points out that "this brief episode shows that Hedda's distaste for what is naturally attractive is more than superficial.
