             They warned against the development of "democratic nationalism and delegated republicanism. In a nutshell the Anti-Federalist believed that a stronger regional and local governments where far superior for the administration of laws and the safeguarding of personal liberties than a large consolidated republic. The argued that by keeping the majority of the legal power in the hands of the states ad counties the people would be better served. Under English rule the American Colonist had suffered under the yoke of a ruler who did not understand or care about their well being. With this mindset the Anti-Federalist did not want to give up their State sovereignty to a new set of rulers. They felt that by establishing a strong national government, whose members where elected indirectly and for extend terms, despotism would result. The Anti-Federalist believed that instead a system in which representatives where directly elected and served closer to their constituents would result in a system of greater accountability and preservation of personal freedoms.
