By doing this the government has limited the consumers to either buy overpriced and highly taxed alcohol from Alko or to go abroad to purchase alcohol. Most of the consumers do not find it profitable enough to go abroad in order to purchase alcohol, and are therefore forced to buy alcohol from Alko. A 70 cl bottle of Smirnoff vodka would cost just under £ 30, a similar bottle costs about £ 10 when bought in Tesco. One of the reasons for the extreme price was to limit the sale of alcohol, as the government saw it is a threat to society. Finland has one of the highest suicide rate in the world, and a significant part of the population are depressed during the winter period. With the "Alko system- the government could not only lower sales but also keep track of how much alcohol is being sold. However since Finland's acceptance to the European Union, they have had to change this system. Not only do they have to lower the tax on alcohol, but also open up the market for other competitor in order to make a more consumer friendly business environment. The Finnish government were to too happy with this but have complied with this and have already lower the taxes. Now the same bottle of Smirnoff does not cost more than £15 a bottle. This is an example of how the Finnish government hindered the business environment and how the European union helped it.
Government can also choose to hinder the business environment in order to help the society. One example of this would be how governments have enforced laws, in order to cut down pollution. Chemical factories, power plants and other factories that have high levels of pollution tend to be hindered by governments. One way is by setting a limit of how much the factory is able to produce. The governments set a maximum level of pollution emitted allowed by each firm. This will of course limit the level of production, which is reflected in the price of the good.
