The Strange Case of Addiction: The Real Story of Dr.
Jekyll was an innocent man who could not free himself from his obsession with his evil counterpart, Mr. Hyde. In the world today, there are millions of people like this fictional character who are consumed and controlled by a certain action, feeling, or substance. These habitual compulsions range from anything to surfing the web to potent narcotics. In Stevenson's classic novel, "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," he takes us on a journey through the stages of addiction, revealing the mental processes, causes, and effects of the extraordinarily common, yet potentially dangerous syndrome of addiction.
Addiction is usually considered a horrible word, reserved only for those who are constantly enslaved in the power of mind-altering drugs. However, it has been a part of all of our lives at one time or another and is commonly overlooked by most people. Watching television, the toy we always wanted and could not get enough of, and the infatuation of our first love are just a few examples. Anything that alters our behavior or mental processes and causes compulsive thinking or action can be considered an addiction. Curiosity, boredom, loneliness, and peer pressure are just a few causes of these habits. As in the case of Dr. Jekyll, his curiosity and a seemingly innocent determination for scientific discovery led to obsession of his work. This addiction occurred long before his evil counterpart Mr. Hyde was even a figment of his imagination. This is the case of many people, where they unknowingly push themselves closer and closer to edge of addiction by putting themselves in risky situations. Once the user begins the cycle, they fall victim to their own mind as they tumble into a nearly inescapable downward spiral. This free fall starts with the first stage; Experimentation. .
The first phase is where a certain action or chemical is introduced to a person.
