Gender Bender

Fonda took the woman by the hand and brought her out to the dance floor so everyone could see the target of her amusement. The woman was dressed in a flowing black and white ensemble that appeared to have holes in the sleeves. "Call the fashion police!," Fonda screamed. She then mercifully let the woman back into her group and soon found a young man around my age whose haircut became the next object of her ridicule. There is no resentment, however. The subjects of Fonda's scorn were laughing just as hard as the members of the audience who didn't get picked on. After it seemed like there was no one else left to taunt, she introduced the next drag queen who held the title of the current reigning "Miss Greenville" - Miss CC Dupree. CC gyrated her hips in choreographed moves which seemed to match those of Christina Aguilera's while she lip-synched and performed "Dirty". .
             As I sat in the dressing room before the show had even started, Scott admitted to me that some of his acts have become "a little monotonous" but that he hasn't yet tired of impersonating women. Fonda's male alter ego did make one thing clear for me, "I don't want to become a woman. There is no fetish in doing what I do. I don't want plastic surgery nor do I want to alter my body in any way. My intent is not to fool people. I am simply an entertainer. This is something outrageous and lots of fun to do but I could take it or leave it." I also learned that Scott works as a book seller when he is not entertaining audiences at The Paddock or other clubs over the weekend.
             I interviewed another drag queen, who I must say, did closely resemble a woman - minus the Adam's apple, caked on make-up, and large hands and feet, of course. Her "drag" name was Ebony Summers. Elaborating on her reasons for performing in drag, Ebony noted, "I work full time at a restaurant as a man, but I love doing drag. When my mom put make-up on, I was right behind her.
