Since the mid 60's affirmative action has had a place in American society. Some people believe that it is not necessary in today's society. Others believe the abolition of affirmative would lead to segregation at colleges and universities. There are many arguments that support both sides of the subject. This subject can't be taken likely because the effect takes up many years of our already cluttered court systems.
Affirmative action in colleges and universities should not be upheld. If a white student with excellent high school grades applies and does not get into a school that he deserves to attend because a colored student with decent high school grades takes there place that is reversed discrimination. Affirmative action was put in place to stop discrimination in institutes of higher learning. To some extent it works but it also works in the opposite direction. Color-blind admission should be tested to see the reaction around the country. A person should be accepted to a college or university for there credentials not there race or creed.
There are many ways deal with minority's access to college besides blatant racial preferences. One is to make the education received in elementary and high school better. If all races are given the same level of education younger in there school lives there is no reason that race should even be considered. But if that is not able to be done there is no reason that standardized test scores should be curved to give minority's better scores. If a students grades are altered because of there race and are accepted because of it they are not getting accepted for what they can do. They were accepted on false terms and that might not reach the standards of the college or university in which they are attending. Standardized tests are not the only thing colleges and universities look at it is known that some people that may excel in the classroom might not test very well.
