The reign of the Safavids ended because the Iranian people felt that too many things, such as paper money and communication lines, had been given away and to western companies to control. After the death of the last of the Safavids, the country went into political unrest and economic turmoil. .
The Qajars came into power after a half - century civil war. The Qajar dynasty lasted from 1794 until 1925. This dynasty brought back the idea that the shah was a shadow of God on earth; this would allow them to hold more control over their people if the subjects thought that the ruler's powers had been a direct order from God. It also illustrates how big a part religion, specifically Islam played in the government during this regime. This dynasty was unsuccessful in maintaining a standing army similar to those of Europe and would end up being the demise of the regime. Early in the nineteenth century, Iran faced pressure from Britain and Russia and ended up signing treaties that gave up many of their colonies to Britain and Russia.
This dynasty finally fell from a military coup d"etat.
The Pahlavis dynasty started in 1921 when Reza Khan, an army officer with the Persian Cossack Brigade, took control of the country in a coup d'etat and formed a military dictatorship. In 1925 he became shah, calling himself Reza Shah Pahlavi. .
The reign of the Pahlavis was by far the most secular of all of the governments that Iran has had in place. They gave women the right to vote, took away the laws that had them wearing veils over their faces, and gave them the right to enter into parliament. Also during their reign they had a land reform where they bought land from owners and then sold that land plus land owned by the crown to the tenants, this was to try to end the feudal system that Iran had been under since the middle ages. There were riots because of the westernization of the country, mostly incest by the head of Islam because of their loss of power during this government.
