Which Battery is best for Your Money? .
Introduction: For my experiment I chose to evaluate batteries to find out which type of battery last the longest. I will also find out which battery is best for your money. I am only conducting this experiment on AA batteries. In thin experiment I hope not to learn just what battery lasts the longest, but how they work also.
When you look at most batteries they contain to sides to them. One side is called positive and the other negative. On AA batteries (What I am testing) these parts are called terminals. Electrons are what are in the battery. The electrons collect on the negative side to the battery. If you connected a wire from the negative terminal to the positive terminal of the battery then the electrons will travel from the negative side to the positive. (This is very dangerous if done on large batteries). This will make the battery run out of power very fast. You usually plug a battery in to a load. A load is a radio or light bulb or something you connect the battery into. For a battery to work you must have the negative terminal plugged into a positive one, thus making a chemical reaction to produce more electrons. If a battery is not connected into a load, then it can keep its power for a very long time.
The first battery was created by Alessandro Volta in 1800. His battery contained many alternating layers. The layers were made of zinc, silver, and blotting paper (paper you use to write on with calligraphy pens). .
This is what it looked like.
This arrangement is known as a voltaic pile. The top and bottom layers of the stack must be different metals. If you attach a wire to the top and bottom of the pile, you can measure the voltage of the pile. The pile can be stacked as high as you want, and each layer will increase the voltage by more. .
This is how a standard carbon battery AKA AA battery works:.
Pretend that you have a jar of sulfuric acid (H2SO4).
