Affirmative Action

Herring states:.
"[no quot. marks with block quotes] Most Americans are well aware that women and people of color have been victims of discrimination. [ ] to justify its existence: (1) the need for compensatory justice for the victims of discrimination; (2) the need to truly equalize opportunity so genuine merit can be demonstrated; (3) the need for proportional representation so that women's and people of color's collective needs, interests, and sensitivities can be better served; and (4) the need to monitor and guard against current and future discriminatory behavior. From the less lofty perspective of "enlightened self-interest," better minority representation can also enhance marketing savvy vis -vis minority consumers [ ]. (Herring)[omit].
In this passage, Herring is explaining that affirmative action is needed to make up for and prevent discrimination in America. In result of equal opportunity given by affirmative action, true merit will be recognized in society and people of color will be treated better. Next, in the article called "Gephardt backs race-based admissions-,[inside] writer, Michael Kirkland, wrote about people and universities that support affirmative action in schools. àK reports that Democratic presidential candidate, Dick Gephardt, supports the affirmative action policy at the University of Michigan. He[Kirkland? Gephardt?] states:.
The "alleged race-neutral alternatives put forward by the Bush administration are not really 'race-neutral' at all," Gephardt says in his brief. "These percentage plans, standing alone, are not effective in maintaining current levels of diversity nationwide. They also rely, to a great extent, on racially segregated high schools to produce racial diversity in colleges. Therefore, these alleged race-neutral alternatives are constitutionally suspect. (Kirkland)[unnecessary].
             K. reports that Gephardt supports the current policy and says that the Bush administration's policy is not efficient enough to maintain diversity in higher education.
