Affirmative action in American society is one of the most debatable topics found in America, today[rep. America/n]. Cedric Herring, a professor in the Institute of Government and Public Affairs and the Department of Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago, states that affirmative action "consists of activities specifically to identify, recruit, promote and/or retain qualified women and members of disadvantaged minority groups in order to overcome the results of past discrimination and to deter discriminatory practices in the present- (Herring)[actually unnecessary since you have mentioned his name in the quote intro). The first arena, in which,[no commas] affirmative action can be used in is the American workforce. Affirmative action, in this case, is used to help minorities receive jobs at places, where minorities are underrepresented. The second place,[no comma; the wh-clause is needed] where affirmative action can be enforced,[no] is in colleges and universities. Affirmative action at colleges and universities is[this is debatable; needs a qualifier] used to help admit underprivileged minorities into their institute.
