             During life time, all of us are going through wonderful life experiences: making plans for the future, obtaining degrees, building up our careers, getting married and having children. Those who take these life opportunities away by a brutal act of murder deserve a severe punishment. An appropriate punishment for this type of crime should be the death penalty. There are many debates around this issue as it involves taking away a person's life. Some people believe that it is a barbaric method of an uncivilized society, which is immoral and unfair. I, like most of the people in the United States, support the death penalty. I believe that murderers, who take away lives of innocent people, should be given the death penalty as a punishment.
             The death penalty is a deterrent to crime and can, in turn decrease crime rates.
             The death penalty gives the people something to be afraid about. Edward Koch proves this by showing how convict Luis Vera, felt about his crime: "Yeah, I shot her," Vera admitted. "She knew me and I knew I wouldn't go to the chair" (558).With the death penalty in affect, they will think twice about committing a crime because they know that it may end up in their death. A true crime deterrent effect can occur when the death penalty is enforced so well that it actually lowers rates of crime resulting from fear of punishment. This is a strong technique used time and time again, yet the low execution rates do not really frighten anyone enough to deter them. .
             People fear death more than life without parole. The most conclusive evidence that criminals fear the death penalty more than life without parole is provided by convicted capital murderers and their attorneys. 99% of all convicted capital murderers and their attorneys argue for life, not death, in the punishment phase of their trial.
