The Electoral College is the collective name for a group of electors, nominated by political parties within the states and popularly elected, who meet to vote for the president and vice president. This Electoral College was created to protect the people of the United States from themselves. This is very unfair in present time of educated people and instant country wide news. The Electoral College system of electing a president and vice-president needs to be replaced with a method that better represents the will of the American people.
To understand the problem of the Electoral College one must learn about its past starting with why it was created. The Electoral College was created for two reasons. The first purpose was to create a buffer between the population and the selection of the president. The second was part of the structure of the government that gave extra power to the smaller states. The first reason that the founders created the Electoral College is hard to understand today. They were afraid of a direct election to the Presidency. They feared a tyrant could manipulate public opinion and come to power. The founders believed that the electors would be able in insure that only a qualified person would become president. They just did not trust the American people to make the right choice. Also they saw the Electoral College as a protection from manipulation from foreign governments being they met only once. The Electoral College was also part of compromises to satisfy small states. Under the Electoral College system states had the same number of votes as the number of representatives they had in congress. This meant that no matter how small the state they would at least have 3 votes. This seems fair to the small states but it makes vote in a small state worth more than someone's vote in a large state. Basically the Electoral College was created because of the lack in confidence in the American people and small states refusal to any plan that would not give them comparable power with the large states.
