Another example of an incomplete argument is Eisenhower's recollections of a July 1945 meeting with President Truman. (Doc. C) First off it is his recollections and he is also writing years after the war was over in 1948. Also he does not give any real information to back his argument and it says, "it was my personal opinion" that no one could keep the Red Army out of the war unless victory came before they could enter. His personal opinion is also very biased since he was the Commander of European Theatre which had many issues in coordinating with Russian forces, therefore he would want to use the bomb to end the war before the Russians could get involved. While in a position to "foresee certain difficulties" his statement is not a statement but an opinion. Both, Eisenhower and Arnold, give reasons why the atomic bomb was or was not necessary for different reasons but neither of their reasons is thorough enough to show that the bombs were not necessary to make Japan surrender unconditionally. .
The Japanese violently attacked the United States at Pearl Harbor killing about 3,000 American personnel. Japan an ally to Nazi Germany had to be stopped once Germany had surrendered. The government was eager to be the first country to find the atomic bomb, especially before Germany. The atomic bomb however, was not created until after Germany surrendered which left it to be used on Japan if needed. The use of the atomic bomb was to be greatly considered. One important consideration was of the American lives at stake and the time that it would take. Stimson said the plan for the defeat of Japan had been prepared without reliance upon the atomic bomb. We are told that the plan that was devised was expected to cost over a million casualties to American forces alone. The plan that they had would not seize the major fighting of the war until the latter part of 1946. The total strength of Japan's army was estimated at 5,000,000 men.
