Independence of Spanish America

Carlos III thought that America was there to help the monarchy and that is it. The Bourbon reforms were poorly orchestrated, and were executed even worse. .
Much of Europe went to war in 1789, which began the French Revolution. Spain's great reformer King Carlos III died in 1788 leaving his successor Carlos IV and Spain in a tough position. Carlos IV was weak and just not ready to rule like a king. The Revolution in France was spreading and also frightening king Carlos IV. France was very close to Spain, who did not want their neighbor out of hand. Carlos was also scared because he did not want the people of Spain to hear talk of revolution so he reactivated the Inquisition to find books that could prove harmful to the kingdom as well as people who were considered a threat. Carlos's cousin King Louis XVI of France, was less than pleased with what Carlos had done so to ease tension between France and Spain Carlos began to let news from France and revolutionary propaganda flow into Spain. This upset the people of Spain and they wanted a new minister to govern. A young man named Manuel Godoy who was very much liked by the royal family was chosen to basically rule Spain because Carlos was never into being a king. The problem with Godoy was that he was not educated and he also did not have the experience needed to lead a country. The people of Spain were aware of Godoy's lack of ruling knowledge, as well as his relationship with the royal family and they weren't too happy about it. Both the rich and the poor had problems with Godoy during a time when the Crown needed as much support from it's people as it could get. The problems for Godoy only got worse when Louis XVI was executed which put the Spanish into battle with the French revolutionaries. .
This loss to the French left Spain and France as allies which makes Britain and Spain enemies. By 1808 the people of Spain had grown tired of Carlos IV, his wife, and Godoy so Carlos was forced to abdicate his throne for his son Fernando VII to have.
