People begin smoking for many different reasons. Here are the most common reasons for kids to start smoking. Many teens struggle to find friends and often give into peer pressure in order to feel accepted. These teens are extremely self-conscious. They are willing to do anything so they aren't looked at as different or an outcast. What many teens don't know is that smoking can become a habit with many risks and is a high price to pay in order for them to think they fit in. According to JELiowa.com tobacco advertising plays a big role in encouraging young people to start a lifelong addiction to smoking before they fully understand the risks involved in it. Advertisements make smoking look cool and sophisticated, lacking the real truth about smoking which may result, such as cancer or even death. According to the Federal Trade Commission of 1998 $5,660,000 dollars per year on cigarette advertisements. Compared to 1988 when smoking advertisements were only $2,580,000 dollars. It is out of control. Referring to teens against tobacco some teens begin to smoke because they know that their parents do not approve of it, but in many cases teens who do smoke as a way to rebel against their parents are really following in their footsteps. The parents are trying to stop kids from making the sam mistakes that they made, the kids just don't understand. Finally, some kids begin to smoke because they are insecure with their weight. They think that smoking will help them keep off unwanted pounds, but in reality it is making you not think at all while putting your health in severe danger. According to the University of Michigan institute for social research 22.7% of high school males and 22.4% of females smoke at least three times a day. Over 90% of these teenagers started smoking before reaching high school. Looking at the National Center for Health Statistics in 2000 35.7% of kids under twelve have at least tried a cigarette.
