Grandpa

January 1st, my grandpa named Sefket arrived to California. He had a long flight coming from Bosnia, which is in Europe. I was glad to see him because I haven't seen him since the day I left Bosnia. That means that I haven't seen him in 12 years. My grandpa couldn't recognize me once he saw me. He said that he was expecting to see a skinny little boy like I was when I was 6 years old. I told him that I am 18 years old now and that people do grow and change, but I guess time went by fast and he wasn't really of aware of it. .
First I was very reserved when he arrived because I haven't really had a chance to have any kind of long conversations him since all I do when my mom calls him is ask him how he is doing. Now that he was sitting right next to me, it felt a little weird to be seeing my old and helpless grandpa. He does look older which is normal but he can barely walk. He seemed very exhausted and sick, but I guess that is why he came to visit us. He thinks that in a year or two he will not be able to do much because of his health condition, and that is why he needed to see us this year. .
This time I was really able to see all those years in him, the years of hard work, being alone, and living in fear during the war. I felt bad for him, and I still do. I wish that he could stay here with us because then I would take care of him, just like I take care of my grandma who lives here with my family and me. .
My grandpa surprised me a bit because he remembered everything my mom has told him about me. He seemed so updated, and he seemed to know a lot about a teenager's life here in California. He tried to share some advice with me, and I have to say I appreciated it a lot. It's not like I don't have my parents to talk to me, but I do like it when someone like my grandpa cares about me and the things I do. We talked about my school, my friends, cars, and life in general. It wasn't awkward anymore.
