Perspectives on sex and gender

Even though this reason for behaviour is not the same as biologists" views it does not necessarily mean they cannot co-exist, for example it may well be that typical behaviour and physical traits of males stems from the evolution of successful reproduction strategies but this may have resulted in a higher production of the male hormone testosterone resulting in larger frames and the more aggressive temperament that also seems to be part of this strategy
             .
Evolutionary psychologists also have an answer for why humans commit to one another , this they believe stems from the development of the human infants brain which was constrained during the time spent in the mother's womb due to shape of the pelvic girdle of the now upright human, this meant that the brain carried on developing long after its birth and so depended on the parents longer, because of this a greater commitment was needed from the father and so would be another trait looked for in a potential male. Trivers.1972.
Also because humans could mate at anytime a male would be more likely to bond with her and guard her from other males to ensure any offspring are his. In modern times this behaviour of guarding is seen as one of the lesser desirable trait of jealousy. Buss et al, 1992.
Evolutionary psychologists believe the reason it was found that males are more likely to sleep with a stranger then females ( a finding from a study conducted by Clarke and Hatfield (1989) can also be explained by the evolutionary reproductive strategy in males, but there have been many other reasons put forward, for instance could it just be the fact that men are more likely because it is expected of them or because it is not frowned upon as it would be for a women, are they just playing out a part given to them and expected of them by society and culture? (Dunbar et al,199) .
