new. The 9th district of Budapest embodies everything that the city had to go throughout the .
centuries. In this district the different centuries with their own style are mixed together .
making it a colorful place. Its cultural life has always put the 9th district into the .
center of the capitol's social life and this tendency has only been strengthened in the past .
couple of decades. Building are being renovated, new building are being built, and slowly the .
whole face of the 9th district is reshaped. Its cultural life perhaps never been as vivid as .
nowadays. The inhabitants of the area also changed in the last decades. Young people are .
attracted by all the diversity and the vivid atmosphere this wonderful district can offer. The .
district's rapid development now raises new questions about its status in Budapest. .

The Past.
The development of the areas outside the city walls of Pest started as early as in the 18th .
century. Ferencváros was one of the last districts established, which they named after Ferenc .
I, the emperor of Hungary in 1792. Until 1810 the area was mostly inhabited by farmers, and .
the lands were usually used as grazing. Interestingly, this historical fact is showed through old .
street names, such as Liliom (lily), Viola (stock), or Bokréta (posy). At the beginning of the .
Industrial Revolution many factories and new businesses were set up in the district.
