The EYE

The London Eye was designed by David Marks and Julia Barfield a pair of architects who first planned the attraction in 1993. The London Eye was chosen as the project to mark the Millennium in London. The concept of a wheel was an ideal symbol for London in the Millennium. As well as representing the turning of the century, a wheel is a universally recognised symbol of time and regeneration. Nowadays it is one of London's biggest attractions. Sweeping the London skyline at 135m (450ft) the British Airways London Eye is the world's highest Ferris wheel. .
The London Eye is suspended over the river on the south bank of the Thames in the Jubilee Gardens, in front of The London Magistrate it faces The Houses of Parliament. The wheel carries passengers high into the air, providing staggering views of central London to a distance of about 40km. .
The construction of the Eye took almost seven years. Engineering the wheel has been complicated and there are several novel features in its design: these include the design of the rim, main spindle and capsules. Most of the techologies used to create the Eye where invented from the scratch. The main structure for the London Eye, the biggest wheel rim in the world was designed and developed in Holland. The spindle at the centre of the wheel structure and the hub, which rotates the wheel around the spindle, was specially designed and manufactured by Skoda . The spindle is 23 metres and turned out to be to big to cast as a single part so it was devided into eight pieces. .
Capsules are the result of French and Italian cooperation. The fully enclosed, high-tech passenger capsules were built by the French company POMA. A technologically advanced stability system was developed to ensure a smooth ride and to enable passengers to walk around the capsules freely. Curvature glass panels have been made in Italy to create the space-age observation 'bubbles'.
