Puritan Dilemma

In discussing the thirteen original colonies, one confusion enters my mind. Diversity obviously played a huge role in the relationship that the colonies shared. In reality it would seem that each colony would experience similarities that they could build upon, and achieve higher goals. Would it not have been more sensible for the colonies to share the New World, and bind a healthy relationship that would be accessible in years to come?.
The first settlement in America took place in Virginia in 1607. The question that weighs on my mind is why would it take until 1776 to form a complete unity? Each colony was striving for success, and each person that arrived in America was searching for changes. Though each person may have been looking for something different, they were all escaping England, and finding freedom they had never experienced. I have always heard that a group working as one would accomplish more then a thousand individuals. .
We discussed the example of diversity that occurred between the colonies of Virginia and Massachusetts. Though the two were one of the first permanent settlements in America, they saw one another as enemies. The two held many similarities. For example, both had the same economic foundation, joint-stock companies. Their finances were provided by shareholders. I think that each colony should have been more concerned about how they could help each other, rather then forming boundaries that set them apart. Religion and material goods should not have caused division. .
The American colonies also diverged themselves into four different sections. Classifications were considered as Northern and Middle colonies, and Southern and Chesapeake colonies. However, was this division really necessary? The colonies grouped themselves according to similar characteristics. I feel that they could have found characteristics that laid deeper than geographic location.
