Christianity and Homosexuality

The issue of homosexuality is one of hot debate in the West but here in India is not spoken of much. The closest that I have come to a gay person here in Bangalore is that I used to go to the same gym as one. I never spoke to him but from what I could see he seemed pretty normal to me. I have to say having seen movies like "Philadelphia-, I do sympathize with them due to what I see as unfair treatment by society. That doesn't mean I think homosexuality is right, it is just that at the end of the day they are still human beings and still need to be treated fairly and equally and accorded the same rights as every one else. With the exception of the right to adopt a child I would say that gays should have every other right including legal marriages (not necessarily ones sanctified and recognized by a church). I make the exception for adoption because it no longer directly involves just the two consenting adults but a child as well.

In this paper I intend to explore the topic of homosexuality by looking at Christianity and homosexuality. I chose Christianity because it is within Christianity that different views on homosexuality arise. It involves The Bible and beliefs on what The Bible is and how it should be interpreted. I personally would like to hear the justification of having gay clergy when everyone knows that (according to the Old Testament) God rained fire on the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah which were populated by homosexuals.
             Christianity and Homosexuality.
In North America, gay activists and religious (Christian) conservatives clash over the issue of homosexuality with the latter treating the Bible as the word of God and inerrant i.e. free of error and absolutely authoritative. This means if the Bible says so, it is so, even in the face of conflicting scientific proof since divinely inspired words of God are superior to human reasoning.
As mentioned before there is a record in Bible of the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by The Lord who rained burning sulphur upon them.
