In the industrial revolution technological advances have two parts; the machinery itself and the type of power that runs it (McCormick, 23). Technological advances during the industrial revolution are not pure sciences but applied science always in the form of machinery. One major machine of the American industrial revolution was the Cotton Jin invented by Eli Whitney in 1793 (Bland, 14). This machine allowed the southern states to produce over 60% more cotton. Another machine of the industrial revolution was the Mechanical Reaper which was invented by Cyrus McCormick in 1834 (Bland, 20). The second part of technological advances during the industrial revolution was the power to run them. Like hydro power ran machinery in the late 1700's, hydro power ran machinery again but this time in the form of steam (McCormick, 12). In 1807 Oliver Evans introduced the first high powered steam engine (Bland, 6). Another major form of power during the industrial revolution was coal. The coal industry quickly became the ideal of the industrial revolution, minimal costs with quick and mass production. While technological advances were one form of the revolution, efficient methods of production were another.
Production of goods is accomplished by two things, the methods of producing goods, and the labor producing the goods.
