My Commitment to America

Words like, "commitment" and "future" constantly bombard high school students each and every day. We are asked to choose a major, plan our curriculum, decide what we want to do for the rest of our lives, and make decisions to affect the end result - a career. Seldom, however, are we queried about our commitment to our country. However, the terrorism inflicted on the U.S. on September 11, 2001, provides new opportunities and an obligation to reflect on how we can protect our most precious rights and freedoms.
The voice of democracy resounds at every athletic function I attend as bands and vocalists remind as of "broad stripes and bright stars" and the commitment our forefathers had for this country. When I think of the words to that great song, I question my commitment to my country.
Young children recite "The Pledge of Allegiance" daily at school, mimicking words that have little meaning for them. Looking back, those words held little meaning for me, other than the thrill of something memorized perfectly. Now, a few non-believers want to omit "under God" from our pledge. I take offense to this blatant disrespect of not only our nations forefather's languages but also to our Christian heritage.
All around me, there are citizens rising up against changes, and I realize that I must take part in order for my generation to be heard. In order for the people who will choose to rise up with me to be heard as well. It is as I grow up that I have begun to see the government stripping away our individuality, and replacing it with some mechanized robotic ideals of pride and commitment. Even human values have been replaced with a crude sort of animosity. But, still yet, we have yet to question why. I think it is the question that drives us to this lack of understanding. We know to an extent that our minds are being controlled by some force, though our comfort with it, keeps us from inquiring.
