ADSL

The third approach to updating lines for ADSL is to install a Remote Access Multiplexer in an existing DLC cabinet, which only costs around $6,000 to implement (2). The only drawback to this method is that the DLC cabinet is usually already packed full and it does not have the room to fit the unit in the cabinet, which is about the size of a pizza box (2). .
One of the first major hurdles that ADSL had to cross when establishing the technology was creating the global standards to be set with all of the equipment manufacturers. A couple of years ago the ADSL Forum appointed an official group called the UAWG or Universal ADSL Working Group. The UAWG's mission was to create a universal standard for the equipment manufacturers (www.ADSL.com). They decided on a standard called G.Lite or DSL-Lite. This standard would eventually eliminate the need to send a technician out to the customer's site (In most cases). (www.ADSL.com). Phone companies were once required to install a splitter at the customer's site, but now the splitting can be managed at the central office (HTTP://whatis.com/dsl.htm). This will help increase the market for ADSL because a drawback in the technology is the installation. As John Dvorak said in PC Magazine, "I've chatted with installers, and they tell me that they can do around four installations a day. In one local cable area, there are four installers, which means a maximum of 16 people per day can be hooked up" (1). .
Many cable companies and Internet service providers argue that cable modems are as much as 100 times faster than a dial-up Internet connection, running at an ultra-fast speed of 5 mbps. In theory, it's possible. But a more realistic speed is 1 mbps, or about 20 times faster than a typical 56,000-bits-per-second (kbps)dial-up connection. This is still faster than traditional dial-up connections, but if you are paying the high cost of internet service, you should be able to get the full bandwidth.
