Racial profiling

 

            The term racial profiling first emerged in the 1990's along with the term "DWB" which is otherwise known as Driving While Black. This term was used in reference to police stopping more and more African Americans than anyone else because they believed that blacks were more likely to be involved in a criminal activity. Black men in Florida make up only five percent of the drivers that travel along the roads. However, out of every hundred stops involved with a search, seventy-five are black or Hispanic drivers. In August of 2003 the national incarceration number was 171,562 prisoners. There were a rounded number of 160,000 males. Fifty six percent(56%) of them white, and forty one percent (41%) of them were black. According to the National census, eighty one percent (81%) of the American population are white, and only twelve point seven (12.7%) percent African American. The main argument brought by racial profiling against blacks is wether there are so many more blacks in jail considering they actually commit more crimes, or is it because they are being heavily targeted and caught more.
             In the book "Race and Justice" Author Rudolf Alexander Junior examined and stated that in 1996, the U.S. crime statistics show that of eight index crimes six of them were white, and only two African Americans. The white men were involved in crimes including rape, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny, theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. The black men were charged with murder and robbery. This evidence is what Alexander Jr. based his argument against racial profiling on. The facts he presents along with his argument still doesn't speak as loud as the national statistics previously mentioned. Its not fair to look at only Eight men rather than the 160,000 jail birds.
             Racial profiling doesn't only apply to blacks. Nowadays airport security uses racial profiling along with other technics to determine whom they search.
