Michael Hanson was alive but in serious condition. Walker was left in serious condition. He now faces murder charges. This is just one story, but for all fifteen deaths in San Diego County this year there is a horrible story just like this one. Am I against street racing you ask? Well yes I am but I know it's not going to stop anytime soon. So that is why we need to open up more legal places for these races to take place. Statistics show the high risk of the illegal sport. For every 1,000 people who illegally race, 39 are killed or seriously injured, according to Stephen Bender, a professor of public health at California State University, San Diego and principal investigator of racelegal.com. On a good night there are at least 1,500 spectators at one of these illegal events. That means that 58 of them could be dead in the next year. Those are pretty scary numbers. .
As a former illegal street racer I feel I have enough knowledge about the situation. It has been two years since I have raced illegally and exactly one year now that I have raced at a legal track. I"m out of the scene now, but I feel I was one of those lucky ones who had what it took to turn away from it. It seems as though for every person who stops illegally racing two more enter the scene. All the people I knew from the race scene are still in it. They devote all there time and money into it. I can't believe there are people out there who think that opening up more legal tracks is a bad thing. Even with all those deaths and not to mention hefty fines these kids are still going to illegally race.
