At LCIW I found that it was a very interesting experience. I found that it had very pretty look to it. In fact, it looked better than our school did. But we also learned that they had to work very hard to get it to be that way. A lot of the inmates warned us about it and, of course, said that they didn't want us to end up like them. .
Another interesting fact that we learned over there is that they also have classes over there. It is something that helps the inmates to get a job when they leave from the prison. They also make shirts. The shirts they produce are distributed to their other institutes like Angola and Hunts. .
I found that it was creative the way they named the buildings on the prison's grounds. They named them after Zodiac signs. They were also creative the way that they get the prisoners to do their work. They can allow them to work to be paid or they can choose to work without pay and they can use that time that they worked toward getting out earlier. They also allow they"re trustee workers to do the better jobs like being tour guides.
Most of the prisoners did they"re work and didn't talk back or gripe about doing it. I feel that they had a lot of self-control because if I were working that close to the gates I would try to escape. But they haven't had any attempts to break out in years and those two that did try didn't make it very far.
If any of the inmates seriously violated any of the rules they would be put under maximum-security. The maximum-security dormitory was called Capricorn. While under maximum-security the inmates are locked up 23 hours out of the day and get 1 hour for exercise. But there are dorms with lesser restrictions. There are Libra and Pisces. The rooms there were as small as some people's walk in closets. They aren't allowed to keep their things locked up. They"re could be called for inspection of their rooms at anytime.
Basically this trip was a real eye opener to what life really is like in prison.
