Social Problems

The social problem I would like to discuss in this paper is government and corporate abuse of power. Leaders in the government and in corporations help each other for their own gain instead of joining forces to improve society as a whole. .
This problem is evident in the movie "The Pelican Brief." A man in the oil business, named Victor Mattice, is friends with the President and donated to his campaign fund. When a theory about the murders of two Supreme Court justices surfaces, and Victor Mattice is named as a suspect, the President asks the FBI to back off and not to consider him as a suspect. At that point in the movie the connection between government and business was stronger than justice. People in high positions can make the system work for their benefit and to save themselves. They take advantage of the system.
According to the functionalist perspective this is a problem because all of the parts are not working together as they should. Massive corporations and government threaten cultural values. The power concentration isn't constant between cultural values and the reality of politics and economics.
A solution to this problem according to the functionalist perspective would be to balance the concentration of power. Society needs to be able to have some control over what goes on in government and corporations. I don't think it would work for everyone to have equal power, but if society had more power in government and corporations maybe some of the problems could be stopped and people in high government and corporate positions couldn't abuse their power.
The moral side of the issue involves unrighteous dominion. Government and corporate leaders use their positions to dominate over others. "And now behold, I say unto you, that the foundation of the destruction of this people is beginning to be laid by the unrighteousness of your lawyers and your judges.
