We need to get some idea of the database's interface. Does she just want to enter information straight into the database, or does she want a webpage interface? A webpage interface could allow her to select the type of information she is entering or seeking, and then bring up a short form allowing her to enter specific information pertaining to the individual problem. More clearly, she could have one form with all available fields, or she could choose from several forms with very focused questions that would reduce confusion and extraneous information. One idea is to have a webpage which would query the database as to which machines would need service in the next ten days and show this in one frame (possibly eliminating the need for a separate calendaring software), and would allow the user to choose a particular form in the other frame. We need to know if this is the type of thing she is looking for, or if she has any other specific ideas.
We also need to know if there is any existing database software such as ColdFusion, MySQL, etc., and if we will have to work with that software or if they are open to change. The IOG may already have a variety of software for us to choose from. An employee has said that the IOG is also subject to budget problems, which may prevent us from purchasing any software they do not already have.
Constraints on Design: Both the manager and her boss have to approve of the changes. There could be possible confusion about the exact design of the project. The manager feels the need for the system because she is in constant contact with computer users. Her boss might find it useful, but there is a chance he will want to change some things possibly changing the whole idea. The manager has had past designs made for her that has not pleased her and was thrown out.
