Ted Turner's Cultural Significance

 

Ed Turner eventually committed suicide at the age of 53. This incident gave Ted Turner the family business at an early age. Ted, though, was a smart businessman and prevailed. With being located mainly in Atlanta, Turner bought a television station that ultimately became what we know today as TBS, the Superstation. With several smart business decisions and gambles, Turner used his money wisely and almost dumb at times to acquire other business, which include three sporting organizations in the professional rankings. With the success of TBS around the country, Turner created other networks that would be just as successful. . Turner's status attracted the attention of his third wife, Jane Fonda. This marriage was one of the most talked about at the time, with Fonda already being known as a celebrity. In 1992, Turner won Time Magazine's Man of the Year. In 1995, Turner sold TBS to Time Warner, which made Time Warner the world's largest entertainment conglomerate, and Ted became a very rich man. With the business deal, Turner earned reportedly over $10 billion (Encyclopedia of Entrepreneurs, 457). .
             Lets first discuss why Ted Turner is a popular icon. When you first look at the name of a couple of his channels, you see his name. TBS stands for Turner Broadcast System. TNT stands for Turner Network Television. His name is associated with success, now he is known as a household name. Most people in the world have heard of the name Ted Turner at least once from somewhere. He started as an owner of a small billboard company, and now is a huge worldwide entrepreneur. His success is not just limited in the United States; he also spreads it worldwide by carrying his networks around the world. Turner is also a pioneer in technology. Before cable television was created, Turner's first network, TBS, only reached a small percent of the southeastern United States. Turner took advantage of some of the technological advances such as satellites, made his small channel into the most viewed cable network in the U.
