In the movie Gladiator, the basic plot was Maximus trying to overthrow the new emperor of Rome, Commodus. Commodus became the emperor after Marcus Aurelius died, when really he was killed by his own son. Marcus Aurelius wanted Maximus to inherit his throne instead of his own son. He wanted to give him the power because he felt he would give the people back their power and end the corruption of politics, and he thought that Maximus was the only man that could do it. His own son wasn't moral and "must not rule," and the senators shouldn't have ruled because they were corrupted by unethical politics. Maximus was the chief general of the Phoenix Legions, always fighting for Rome, and always by Marcus Aurelius" side. No one ever found out that Commodus killed his father so that he could become the emperor. When he did become the emperor, he ordered his men to kill Maximus. He escaped before they were even able to lay a hand on him. They, however, did kill his wife and son. He then got sold into slavery, and became a gladiator. Proximo was his master, and he told Maximus when to fight. Fighting back in those days was one of their only types of entertainment. They had the gladiators in the coliseum fighting other slaves from distant lands. Whoever won, got the glory, and sometimes the best of the best were freed from slavery. This is what everyone always wanted to see, because they thought it was what the gods had also wanted.
Once Commodus found out that Maximus was still alive, he could not kill him because he thought the people would think he was unjust, and make Maximus a martyr. Meanwhile, Maximus, Gracchus, and the daughter of Marcus Auerlius were conspiring to kill Commodus, and the fate of Rome was going to be left upon Gracchus. So he finally decided to fight him on his own at the Coliseum. Maximus defeated Commodus, and with his dying words he asked for his men to be freed, for Senator Gracchus to be reinstated and for the dream that was once Rome to be realized, which were the wishes of Marcus Aurelius.
