Lord of the Flies Essay

This story is full of deep meaning and also has an interesting plot. The book Lord of the Flies by William Golding is an allegory of society. The theme of Lord of the Flies is that society is what is holding people morally together. Without society the population would lose its values and morals therefore degenerating into savagery and anarchy. These are some main symbols in the story: The conch which symbolizes order and authority; Piggy's glasses which symbolize the ability to see clearly or to perceive what is right; and fire which symbolizes rescue, civilization, the home, safety, hope, and community celebration. There is also another major symbol in the book, and that is "The Lord of the Flies", (The Lord of the Flies literally means Beelzebub in Hebrew) it symbolizes the devil, and all that is evil in society and the world.
The first symbol is the conch, which is a symbol of order and authority. Some of the boys are speaking at the first assembly, ""Him with the shell."/"Ralph! Ralph!"/"Let him be chief with the trumpet-thing."" (Pg. 19). This is showing how immediately the children are associating the conch with authority. They automatically agree that Ralph should be the chief, the only obvious special characteristic being that he has the conch. Piggy says to Ralph, speaking of the conch, when they find the conch. ""We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting./They"ll come when they hear us-""(Pg. 14). This shows how the conch has authority, it can call people to come. Just as Piggy suggests, all the people come when they hear it. At one of the assemblies Jack and Piggy argue, ""But you've talked and talked!"/"I've got the conch"/Jack sat down, grumbling."(Pg. 75). This shows how the conch has the power to keep order. They use it to keep the order at assemblies. The conch is the one thing that holds the most authority and keeps order among the boys; it is one of the only things that is keeping the order.
