I was in labour with my second child, a baby girl. All of the labour pain subsided when the mood in the room changed again as it had three years earlier. The lights went on and the nurses changed the bed from a labouring bed to a delivering bed. I felt the same excitement again as I had two years ago and thought to myself, I want this! .
Healthcare has always been a fascination of mine. The human body is so complex and amazing. I'm always reading articles and books trying to expand my knowledge. Knowing how the body works, how it sometimes fails us and how we can best take care of ourselves is very exciting to me. I want to be the person who helps an individual through a difficult time or the one who holds a labouring mother's hand. I want to care for sick and help them when they think they can't go on any longer. I want to help care for and support others in their time of need.
In my opinion there are good nurses who have the knowledge but lack the "people- skills. There are also great nurses who have the knowledge and sincerely enjoy being with people, working with people. When my oldest was born, my aunt had give birth four months earlier. The care she got in the hospital was very different from the care I received. She received, not only healthcare but also care. Maybe it was because I was young and unmarried that my treatment was different. Maybe the nurses didn't feel that I wanted the same informational sessions and attention as my aunt had wanted. I don't want anyone else to feel the way I had at that time. I felt like I didn't belong with the other mothers. I felt judged. I believe that I have the interest and the personality that it takes to make a great nurse. I genuinely want to help people. I am a very caring, compassionate and patient individual. I feel that nursing is my calling.
My decision to become a nurse came more from within than from anyone else's influence. My youngest child has been hospitalized a number of times with bronchitis, lung infections, asthma and she suffers from allergies as well, so I had the opportunity to witness many nurses while they were working.
