NYC Art Paper

"Every artist dips his brush into his own soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures." A famous quote said by Henry Ward Beecher in "Proverbs from Plymouth Pulpit" in 1887. When I came across this quote I was very intrigued by it because the more I read it the more I concluded that it related magnificently to the piece of work I had chosen. When an artist works on his/her piece, the process is simple. Their work starts from the inside, when they are energizing themselves by delving into their soul and getting their mind ready to portray what they see into the picture they want to create, and the process ends on the outside, when they take all that energy from inside of them and channel it onto the paper and therefore creating a picture that reveals not only the wonderful image they have depicted but also about who the artist really is. I attended an exhibit in the Metro Pictures gallery of the artist, Jim Shaw. It included many of his works, ranging from rare airbrush works to narrative and illustrative drawings to even many of his Dream Drawings. There were many works; many of which were cartoon drawings, but also many larger paintings. One can tell that his style is very detailed and thorough. There was one piece that I found to be very interesting because it was extremely detailed oriented and well done and that was of a painting of many groups of men. Jim Shaw's "Drawn Painting," produced in 2000, is his own depiction of male models in groups; however it is also a picture of him that revealed who he really is and that helped me paint my own picture of him, portraying him as a very meticulous, witty person.
New York City. When I think of there, I think of all the attractions and shopping it has to offer, not art galleries. I usually go there to either to go shopping or to visit the ESPN Zone. However, this trip to New York was a different one because it marked the first time I have solely gone there just to visit art galleries.
