Comparative Essay Chapter: 11-13

 

            Politics and religion play a key role in every civilization, even today. The political and religious characteristics of the Byzantine Empire and of the kingdoms that emerged in England and France during the middle ages were very different and similar at the same time. The kingdoms that emerged in England and France during the middle ages used feudalism, while the Byzantine Empire did not. They both had different religions. They both had a leader or ruler in high power. .
             The kingdoms that emerged in England and France during the middle ages used feudalism, a type of political and economic system, while the Byzantine Empire did not. They had a strong central government. The emperor was portrayed to have been chosen by God. The empire lived by a simplified version of the Roman law called the "Code of Justinian". (The Body of Civil Law) The emperor was appointed head of church as well. This brought to a disagreement of religion. .
             The Byzantine Empire and the kingdoms of Europe had different religions. The Byzantines believed in the East Orthodox Church, while those of Europe were all Catholic. The East Orthodox Church were unwilling to accept the popes claim that he was the sole head of the church. So the two leaders of both churches excommunicated each other and the church split into two. Even though these civilizations had many differences, they still managed to have one similarity. .
             They both had a ruler or leader in high power. The Byzantines had an emperor. Like I said in the last paragraph, he was considered to be chosen of God to rule. He had absolute power over his kingdom. The kingdoms near England and France however, had Kings of great power, but because of the feudalism that was practiced there, there was much subinfeudation, even a king was a vassal to another king at one time, but both of their leaders had great power in their civilizations. .
