This was the beginning of his individual name and company, which came from the knowledge that Gianni had gained from all of the various designing positions. Soon after Gianni would start his own boutique in milan. This was started in 1978 in Milan where he would continue to sell other labels to compliment his own designs as well as make his shop more profitable. .
1978 was also the year of his first fashion show of a women's collection that was signed by his name. With increasing popularity and style Gianni Versace boutiques would flourish across the world. As his name and company grew to be known everywhere across the world he started designing for more prestigious groups and people. In addition to his company and popularity Gianni Versace was starting to receive awards for various lines that he had been creating. .
1982 would mark his first award that he receive for a 1982-1983 fall and winter collection in women's dress "L'Occhio d'Oro" for the best fashion designer of that year. This collection was very different than a traditional line you might see. Versace did something very different by adding a variety of materials not associated with clothing, it was the use of metals (ex this belt).
This award would give him the recognition to start designing costume for Richard Strauss' ballet "Josephlegende". In addition to that is the creation of the costumes for Gustav Mahler's ballet "Lieb und Leid". Which lead to opening its doors at the Padiglione di Arte Contemporanea where Gianni Versace displays of his technological research. 1984 in October he has a large show to and a triptych dance to release his Versace men's fragrance "Versace l'Homme". .
1985 he had always been inspired by young people because young people are the center of his growing business. So Versace starts to travel more and give lectures on his clothing, to improve the sales of his clothing name and popularity.
