Alccohol: a risk for the society

In 1933 the use of alcohol became legal, and the reason was that people tried to produce and import more alcohol then before. After the failure of that law, the government put some roles for using alcohol, which certainly is not enough. For example, drunk driving is forbidden under the law, but unfortunately, over twenty percent of all traffic fatalities in the United State each year are caused by drunk drivers. Thus, drunk driving remains a serious national problem that tragically affects thousands of victims annually. Every single injury and death caused by drunk driving is totally preventable, if the law passes some more strict punishment for drunk drivers. The other step that government should take in order to prevent the over use of alcohol is that it should forbidden the ads that show success related to the alcohol. Joan Dunayer writes in her essay, Here's to your Health, the way ads show relationship between alcohol and success "Part of the myth is that liquor signals professional success. In a silk men's magazine, one full-page ad for Scotch whiskey shows two men seated in an elegant restaurant. Both are in their thirties, perfectly groomed, and wearing expensive-looking gray suits. The windows are draped with velvet, the table with spotless white linen. Each place setting consists of a long-stemmed water goblet, silver utensils, and thick silver plates. On each plate is a half-empty cocktail glass. The two men are grinning and shaking hands, as if they've just concluded a business deal. The caption reads," The taste of success". (696) This kind of ads encourage people to see success through the alcohol, and the truth is that alcohol leads to the dark ways of failure because it dulls the brain and destroy the body. The other issue is the crimes that causes by drinking. About 3 million violent crimes occur each year in which victims perceive the offender to have been drinking at the time of the offense.
