Egyptian Mythology

 

Isis was the daughter of Nut and Geb. She was the sister of Osiris, Nephthys, and Seth. Also, she was the wife of Osiris and the mother of Horus ("The Throne" 2). .
             Isis was one of the earilest goddesses in Egyptian Mythology. Also, she is one of the most powerful goddesses ever to exist. Isis represents more aspects in Mythology than all of the other gods involved. She represents the maternal spirit in its most intimate form. She is often pictured with a young Horus, tending to his every need. In the legend of Isis and Osiris she is seen as a dutiful and very caring wife. She is also seen as a protector of the dead. She is often represented as a woman wearing a hieroglyphic symbol of her name on her head, which represents a throne or seat. She is often seen wearing horns and a solar disk on her head. She is one of the very few deities that are represented with wings. This suggests that she is often portrayed as angelic and very gentle ("The Throne" 1).
             The symbol of Isis in the heavens was the star Sept, which was greatly beloved by the people in that time. It represented renewed wealth and prosperity to the people and country as a whole. She was also known as Khut, the light-giver. Again, a reference to her that elevates her standing to an angel or some sort of heavenly deity ("Isis" 2). Isis was also widely known as the god of fertility and nature. She was known to be very close and connected to her husband, Osiris. After he was murdered, she rescued him and put his body back together and breathed her life into him, thus, bringing him back to life. ("The Throne 2").
             Osiris was an earthly ruler who was extremely popular with his subjects and the people whom he ruled over. His brother Set, however, was not so well-liked and as kind as his just brother. He quickly grew jealous of Osiris; much like The Bible story of Cain and Abel, he plotted to murder his brother in cold blood.
