Christianity & Paganism .
In from Beowulf, there is a variety of symbolism, as well as Christianity and Paganism. Although the facts about Paganism are not as obvious as those of Christianity, they do exist throughout the piece of literature, however paganism is not as visually recognized in comparison to paganism, which has to be searched through out hidden key facts. .
The Christianity, which exists, is the fact that God plays a tremendous role in the life of the characters. He influences their thoughts, beliefs, and actions through out the story. Although few of us may believe that Christianity is involved in this story it is. To begin with, the story begins with the birth of evil monsters and creatures that were soon to be banished by God. So in the biblical feature Cain is the evil son that kills his own flesh and blood brother Abel. (P.40 Line 20-23 conceived by a pair of those monsters born of Cain banished by God, for the crime of Abel's death). .
Christianity represented through the characters as such when Beowulf has faith in God to keep him safe in defeating the evil Grendel. The Geats also showed faith when they arrived the crossing safely in one piece, they praised God for their safe journey. (P.44 Line 139-144; The Geats thanked God for safety in easy crossings of the voyage). God presence deliberated those form sin and evil, by controlling them positively and always being the savior for those who believed. (P.43 Line 83-84; Hrothgar's throne protected by God). .
As for paganism, throughout the story, it was viewed in certain areas. Paganism was represented through the sin, and evilness, in the story brought upon by Grendel, his other and the dragon. (P.42 Line 66-69; Grendel began with offering no peace). They all represented the black shadow characters. Other forms of evil looked up to these figures and believed in what they did, and who they were. .
I believe that paganism is expressed through this because other than worshiping God, others had their views set on idealistic features, as worshiping a shrine.
