Before going more into music Eric was a laborer at building sites were he would work along side his grandfather. Clapton was raised in a musical household. His grandmother played piano and his mother and uncle were fascinated by the sound of big bands. By 1955 Rock n" Roll had made its way into the world. Eric began exploring the roots in American Blues. The blues went together perfectly with Eric because he felt he was different from others. In 1962 he asked his grandparents to buy him a double cutaway Kay guitar that was a replica of a Gibson ES335. This type of guitar was used by his idols Freddie King, B.B. King, and Muddy Waters (Coleman).
The god of guitar mended his way into the world of music. In early 1963 Eric joined his first band The Roosters. Following the band's breakup he spent a month in the pop-oriented group Casey Jones and the Engineers. In October 1963 Keith Relf and Paul Samuel Smith recruited him to become a member of the Yard Birds. They did this because he was the most talked about guitar player on the R&B circuit. It was with the Yard Birds that Clapton made his first album. During this time he earned the nickname slow hand. He earned this name because when he would break a string he would change it to the accompaniment of a slow handclap. In April of 1965 John Mayall invited Clapton to join his band John Mayall's Blues Breakers. During the times with this band Eric established his reputation as a guitarist. Although he was successful with them the band was turbulent and he left the band to go tour Greece with friends. When he got back the album Blues Breaker with Eric Clapton was recorded.
