In this chapter it was 1982 James has grown up and is out of collage. He badgered his mother into telling him about his family roots. When she did he left and set out to find out more about his mothers side of the family. James landed in Suffolk, Virginia. This was the place where his mother grew up. When he went into a McDonalds he found out that this place use to be where his mother lived. After hunting around he found a man named Eddie Thompson. Eddie in turn told him all he knew about the Shilsky family. It turned out that his grandfather was a extreme racist. He would cheat on the blacks to the limit. Eddie found it funny that Shilskys daughter married the thing he hated most. From Eddie James found out that his mothers name use to be Rachel and that she had a older brother and a younger sister who disappeared . .
Chapter 21 .
Ruth remembers the day Bubeh died. She also remembers everyone wanting her to stay and how Dee-Dee stooped talking to her because of that. Ruth's father told her that if she leaves she should never go back home. Ruth goes to New York and she keeps a picture of Mameh. Ruth's mother dies. Ruth feels guilty for Mameh's death .

Chapter 22 .
In this chapter James searched for his family of Suffolk, locating the synagogue his mother went to. James wanted to find Ruth's sister, Dee-Dee, but he felt that to do so would only bring pain into her life. He wanted to enter the synagogue but he wasn't allowed in it. He also wanted to come to terms with his Jewish roots and to be able to tell his children about those roots. The rabbi at the synagogue knew of the Shilsky family and gave a curt response to James's request. James met Aubrey Rubenstein, whose father had taken over the Shilsky's store when Ruth's father left town. Aubrey used James's tape recorder to send a greeting to Ruth but James never played it for her. The burden of his past fell upon him and he felt the pain his grandmother Hudis must have endured in Suffolk.
