If the economic growth stays steady and increases slowly maybe it won't have such a huge effect on Negative Externalities as the people are more aware of the things to come ahead and so they may be more prepared e.g. if there is competition for a job then the worker should have time to get a job elsewhere.
Growth is Unsustainable -.
One of the most serious arguments against Economic growth is that economic growth is unsustainable.
If the western countries continue to grow at 3% per annum then in 25 years the national income will be twice as much as it is today. And in 100 years it will be nearly 19 times the national income at the moment. Each extra percent increase in national income, uses up non-renewable resources. These resources are oil, copper, and coal. I think that this shows that growth has to stop soon. This is because the national income is rising so much and also the price of products will then rise that certain percent every year and everything will be slightly expensive. This may be hard to notice over a year or two but over a really long term i.e. in 10 years you would be able to see the difference. Also the non renewable resources are being used up to quick that they are soon predicted to run out. No doubt that other alternatives and substitutes will be produced and they will take over but the non-renewable resources are being used at such a fast pace and maybe the substitutes might be used in the same way if the economy continues to grow.
The Anti-Growth Lobby - .
Many of the supporters of the anti growth lobby are people that are well off and have a lot of money. These people support the campaign because cutting their consumption by 25% of producing friendly environment alternative technology will not create them too much profit. However leaving the mass of people in the 3rd world today at their present living standards would lead to great inequality. Also another thing to remember is that the anti-growth lobby is stronger in the west than in the east.
