Can the human mind be controlled? That is the question that everyone in today's society should ask himself or herself. Freedom is so often taken for granted, and people don't realize what they have. Freedom is a concept that is not even living in the book 1984. People were only allowed a little part of their brain to think on their own; the rest was up to big brother.
In Oceana there wasn't true education, the party re-wrote history so that they were always right. This kept the citizens ignorant, and keeping people controlled while they are ignorant isn't a difficult task. Fear is another factor, which inspired control by the party. When a human fears something, it usually hides its feelings to avoid or escape punishment. When Winston is caught having a love affair with Julia, he denounces his love when he is forced to face is greatest fear. Having no love in a society is another way to control people. When there is no love, there is no tragedy, because loved ones aren't lost. People, who have no loved ones, really don't know how to live a life that is happy, that is how the party kept them controlled in this aspect. Another way to control a society is limits on food supplies. Someone who is hungry will do anything in order to eat.
In the book, an object called a telescreen was used. These were placed in every apartment and business. These were so that the party could watch the citizens and make sure they are not performing any crimes. Whether or not the telescreens actually viewed people in the house is unknown, they could have used them just to bluff and show the two-minutes of hate, but the citizens had know way of knowing; therefore following the rules. One more tactic used by the party was Thought Police. You could never trust anyone for the fear that they might be part of the thought police. .
All these factors are what caused people to be controlled. When so many ways of fear and distrust are forced into a society, you have no other way then to follow the rules in order to survivie.
